A man has been charged with murder after being accused of a fatal stabbing in a Gold Coast shopping centre car park.

Police were called to the Hope Island car park on Monday afternoon after reports a man had been seriously assaulted.

DI Mark Mooney on Tuesday said police believe the 21-year-old victim was stabbed with a kitchen knife.

Paramedics arrived and treated the man, who had a chest wound, but he died at the scene.

A 23-year-old Redbank Plains man was arrested about 5.30pm on Monday and later charged with murder.

Mooney said it was a “devastating” situation for the families of everyone involved.

The 23-year-old Redbank Plains man was set to appear at Southport magistrates court on Tuesday.

A 23-year-old Surfers Paradise man was also arrested on Monday but has since been released without charge.

Police said both men were known to the victim.
