Gold Coast AFL fans unveil Richmond star Dustin Martin in Suns colours

It appears Gold Coast Suns fans’ collective dream of seeing Richmond champion Dustin Martin don their colours has already materialised.

Ever since Damien Hardwick left the Tigers and hooked up with the Suns, there has been speculation three-time Norm Smith medallist Martin could opt to join him.

The 32-year-old Martin is in the final year of a monster seven-year deal with Richmond, the team he helped to flags in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

The midfielder is absent from Saturday’s opening round clash with the Suns due to a calf complaint, but his presence was still felt around the ground.

That’s because we assume some mischievous Suns fans had some cardboard cutouts made up of the man known as “Dusty” with his arms folded and wearing a full Gold Coast kit.

They didn’t go unnoticed by the Fox Footy commentary team at the newly named People First Stadium on the Gold Coast.

“Those Gold Coast Suns cardboard cut-outs of Dusty Martin,” Jonathan Brown asked his fellow commentators.

“Are they officially sanctioned do you think by the Suns?”

“I wouldn’t have thought so Browny,” Anthony Hudson swiftly replied.

“They look very professionally made,” Brown added.

The AFL’s official social media account joined in the fun on X, posting a photo of a Suns fan holding one of the cutouts with the caption: “Suns fans doing some early recruiting for 2025.”

“Probably wouldn’t get a game there,” was one response.

“Looks good in red,” suggested a Gold Coast fan.

“Not gonna happen, but it’s funny,” wrote a third.

While Martin hasn’t indicated any intention to leave the yellow and black faithful just yet, it didn’t stop speculation on social media.

“Dustin Martin is hoping there’s a mid-season trade period because he’s not going to stay at Richmond much longer,” was one comment on X.

“Dustin Martin is definitely in favour of a mid-year trade period,” was another post.

With Gold Coast holding a 61-point lead at halftime, the commentators were even speculating about a retired Tiger leaving the microphone to return to the fray.

“I think the property steward for Richmond has just run some boots along to Jack Riewoldt here,” Alastair Lynch quipped.

“Lace these up, you’re back on.”
